Get Your Ruby Red Slippers... We're Not in Kansas Anymore

March 13, 2009

We've gone to see a lot of Broadway shows with the kids in New York City (Mamma Mia, Mary Poppins, Beauty and the Beast, and the Lion King), but our favorite was not a Disney production. The show we enjoyed the most and are still talking about two years later was Annie, a traveling show passing through the WaMu Theater in Madison Square Garden.

A few months ago, I started hearing about a similar classic that would be staged in Madison Square Garden: the Wizard of Oz. From the first moment I heard about it, I was determined that we would go see it, budget be darned. I've been watching the various ticket offers cycling through my inbox until I saw one this week that I just could not pass up.

The tickets for select shows are now 50% off!

Of course there are still some of the usual fees piled on top, but the end result is still pretty great: seats for a Friday night show in row K for just $25 a piece (plus about $15 in fees incremental). I feel like my ruby red slippers are already cruising down the yellow brick road.

Here are the details of the offer from my email:

Save 50% on select tickets to select performances by entering the code EMHOUSE at checkout. Hurry, time is melting away!

This offer expires April 5, 2009.

Tickets are available for the following shows:

March 26 at 7:30

March 27 at 7:30

March 29 at 4:00

April 2 at 7:30

April 3 at 7:30

April 5 at 3:00

Tickets can be purchased by going to the Ticketmaster site or by calling Ticketmaster directly at 1-866-858-0009

Karaoke at Bedtime

March 10, 2009

When I'm giving a new babysitter the bedtime routine walk-through, I always save the best instruction for last. I sneak it in so they don't run away screaming. "After stories, peeing, and brushing teeth, I sing a song to each of the kids. Of course this is totally up to you... but they really enjoy it."  I've clearly mastered the sly guilt-inducing close because I haven't had a runner yet. Many look at me like I'm completely crazy, but they all usually nod like they're game.

We started singing to the kids when they were colicky infants. Each of my three children had one magical song that soothed them. For Bella it was endless verses of B.I.N.G.O. adjusted to spell the names of everyone she had encountered in her short lifespan. Jack was the most colicky of the three, but the French lullaby "Dodo, bebe do" usually calmed him down somewhat. Juliette, our little dictator, refuses to close her eyes without a few renditions of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star.

While Juliette's tastes have not evolved beyond the classics, the other two have definitely outgrown their lullabies. However, none have given up the tradition of singing at bedtime yet. We've learned that many traditional children's songs are actually very dark and disturbing. Have you ever sung the full "Oh My Darling Clementine" song? It's actually about a man mourning his bride's death by drowning who then consoles himself by marrying her sister.

Ruby lips above the water,
Blowing bubbles, soft and fine,
But, alas, I was no swimmer,
So I lost my Clementine.

How I missed her! How I missed her,
How I missed my Clementine,
But I kissed her little sister,
I forgot my Clementine.

We now have a fat black binder filled with show tunes, 1970s classics, and many TV theme songs. The Brady Bunch wa a big favorite for a while but Abba and the Beatles are the favorites we always return to.

I'm not sure how many more years my seven-year old will request our scratchy renditions of tired tunes, but I'm ready to belt them out as long as she'll listen.

What about you? Does music play a role in your bedtime routines?

Dan Zanes Giveaway

February 26, 2009

When I think of kids' music, I think of two names: Raffi and Dan Zanes. And if you say contemporary kid music, then the list falls down to one, just Dan Zanes, although as we're all aging much faster than we can believe, he's well on his way to becoming a classic. If you or your kids are not a Dan Zanes groupie yet, you'll soon have an opportunity to experience a Dan Zanes concert and join the multitude of fans because he's coming to New Jersey!

Dan will be performing two shows in Princeton and Montclair this weekend and it's not too late to get tickets! Click on the links below to reserve your seats for some toe-tapping fun. Here are the links for the shows:
  • Saturday, February 28 - Princeton - McCarter Theater Center
  • Sunday, March 1 - Montclair - The Wellmont Theater
Dan Zanes is the former lead singer of the Del Fuegos. He has kept parents throughout America sane by bringing a fresh take to children's music. You won't think this music is for the under-ten set when you hear it. The sound is bluesy honky tonk, music that is great to play on a Sunday afternoon. It's impossible to not tap your foot along with the beat. His albums are studded with cameos from big names like Lou Reed and Debbie Harry.

Dan Zanes' latest album, The Welcome Table!, is a collection of tunes drawn primarily from North American gospel traditions put together to help create awareness for The New Sanctuary Movement - a coalition of interfaith religious leaders working to respond actively to combat immigrant discrimination, on the album. His earlier album, Catch That Train!, was the 2007 Grammy Award winner for Best Musical Album for Children.

I have five bundles of Dan Zanes albums to giveaway to some lucky Savvy Source winners. This should give everyone a chance to get to know Dan Zanes or to broaden their library. Each winner will receive two Dan Zanes albums: Catch That Train! and Nueva York! To enter to win, just send me an email to beingsavvynewark@savvysource.com by Friday, March 6 with your favorite children's singer. I'll select the winners at random that night.

Other Upcoming Events in the area include:
  • ROCK OUT! The children's band, Milkshake, will be performing at the Wyckoff Y this Saturday 2/28 at 1PM.
  • THE CIRCUS IS COMING TO TOWN! The new Ringling Brothers show, Zing Zang Zoom, is coming to NJ. The show will be at the Prudential Arena in Newark from March 5 - March 9 and then in E. Rutherford at the Meadowlands from March 11 - March 15. A four-pack of tickets is just $44 if you enter code MOM at Ticketmaster. And I'm giving away four tickets over at Chefdruck Reviews

Mozart, Moby or Miles - All About Music in Northern New Jersey

October 21, 2008

A little over a year ago, I had an epiphany. I was sitting in a Go Diego Go Live concert, barely surviving the grating off-key voice of the lead singer when my children started singing along energetically. Although they were having a wonderful time, I was appalled. By shelling out big bucks and bringing them to this inane show, I was telling them that this was good music and depriving them of  Read more...
